“Chilling timelessly” reflects not only the atmosphere of this apartment, but also our approach to architectural intervention when working within the layered reality of a typical Athenian residence - spaces shaped by their era, proportions, and dense urban context.

The project began with a second-hand apartment carrying the quiet weight of its past: a familiar typology within the Athenian polykatoikia, defined by generous floor-to-ceiling heights, compartmentalised rooms, and a material palette that had aged unevenly over time. Rather than approaching the renovation as a tabula rasa, the owners invited us to engage in a process we consider essential - carefully reading, unravelling, and ultimately reinterpreting the existing structure.

At the core of the design strategy was a conscious decision not to overwrite the apartment’s identity, but to reveal and recalibrate it. This meant preserving key spatial qualities - such as the continuity of the wooden flooring, the rhythm of openings, and the scale of the rooms - while selectively intervening where contemporary living demanded it. The result is not a contrast between old and new, but a gradual transition where each layer informs the other.

The living spaces were treated as a cohesive sequence, where light, texture, and furniture define a relaxed yet structured domestic landscape. Existing wooden elements, including built-in shelving and flooring, were restored and emphasised, anchoring the apartment in its original material language. Around them, softer contemporary touches - loose furniture, textiles, and carefully curated objects - introduce a sense of informality and lived-in comfort.

A key moment in the apartment unfolds around the kitchen and dining area. Here, the intervention becomes more explicit, yet remains deeply respectful. The introduction of gentle geometries - arched openings, rounded edges, and built-in elements - softens the transition between spaces, creating a fluid connection between the social core of the home and its more private zones. The kitchen itself is conceived as a quiet backdrop: white cabinetry, marble surfaces, and brass details form a restrained palette that allows everyday life to take center stage.

Color and pattern are used with intention, primarily in transitional spaces. The entrance, treated as a distinct threshold, introduces a bold chromatic identity that contrasts with the neutrality of the main living areas. Geometric floor patterns extend this moment, guiding movement and subtly marking shifts in function. These interventions act less as decorative gestures and more as spatial cues - signals of entry, pause, and transition.

In the bathroom, the dialogue between past and present becomes more tactile. An existing piece of furniture is repurposed into a washbasin, bridging memory and utility, while contemporary fixtures and clean surfaces ensure comfort and durability. The result is a space that feels both familiar and redefined, where craftsmanship and modernity coexist without hierarchy.

Throughout the apartment, details play a crucial role. From the selection of switches and fittings to the junctions between materials, each element was considered as part of a larger narrative - one that values continuity over contrast, and precision over excess.

Working within the constraints of the building, we chose not to challenge its logic, but to work alongside it. The apartment remains recognisably part of its architectural lineage, yet it now supports a different way of living - more open, more adaptable, and more attuned to contemporary rhythms.

This project ultimately reflects a broader position on apartment renovation in Athens. Respecting architectural heritage does not imply preservation in a static sense, nor does it require nostalgic reconstruction. Instead, it calls for a careful negotiation between what exists and what is needed - an approach grounded in observation, restraint, and clarity.

Timeless design, in this context, is not about freezing a moment in time. It is about allowing spaces to evolve while maintaining a sense of continuity - creating environments that feel both rooted and alive, capable of adapting without losing their identity.
